Santa Maria's Oscar Mendoza Debuts At Boxing By The Beach

Bash Boxing
Bash Boxing
As is often the case, every local boxing show has a pro debut somewhere on the card. Unlike the main event that usually features experienced professionals seeking to take one step closer towards glory in their chosen sport, the Debutante fighter, along with a legion of family and friends, anxiously waits for his first step into the squared circle as a newly minted professional. During the April 2, 2016 Boxing By The Beach show at Oceanview Pavilion in Port Hueneme, California, Featherweight Oscar Mendoza will do just that. And that first professional bout will be engrained in his memory forever.

Born in Santa Maria, Mendoza spent his early childhood in a small town in Oaxaca, Mexico before returning to Santa Maria at the start of the 2nd grade. Mendoza's early loves revolved around sports, participating in football and track all 4 years at Pioneer High School. Mendoza went on to study Biology and Liberal Arts at Allan Hancock Community College in Santa Maria and then transferred to the University of California at Santa Barbara, becoming the first in his family to be accepted to a University.

Growing up in a family that always watched boxing on television, Mendoza turned to boxing training after his high school sports careers were over. His father introduced him to Santa Maria trainer Jose Antonio Ojeda, a former pro boxer who fought over a dozen times in the Ventura County area from 2003 to 2008. Mendoza trained at the Minami Community Center and also volunteered each day to help train the younger kids before he started his own workout.

Upon moving to Santa Barbara, Mendoza found a second home at Duke's Boxing Gym in Santa Barbara where he is trained and managed by the father/son combination of Oscar Gracia Sr. and Oscar Gracia Jr.. While a busy work and school schedule limited Mendoza to 9 amateur bouts over the past 6 years, he feels he is ready for the professional ranks and is focused on his dream of becoming a World Champion.

Mendoza remembers watching Julio Cesar Chavez and Oscar De La Hoya in his youth and looks up to recent great Mexican warriors Juan Manuel Marquez and Canelo Alvarez. He describes his boxing style as "forever changing and adjusting with a mix of Mexican pride, taking bits and pieces of my favorite fighters and making them my own." And his future goals are as large as the achievements of his boxing heroes. Mendoza hopes his pro debut will be the first step towards making history in his entire family line in achieving great heights such as graduating from a University and winning a World Title.

Oscar Mendoza dedicates his first professional bout to his parents, who have worked hard and made great sacrifices to give Mendoza and his three brothers a better life. When asked what he hopes to accomplish with his education and professional career, Mendoza replies, "I hope to one day take care of my parents so that they can retire happy and never have to worry about any problem, as they have suffered a lot to try to and help their children achieve our dreams."

“BOXING BY THE BEACH” RETURNS SATURDAY, APRIL 2, 2016

Oceanview Pavilion in Port Hueneme To Host “Solo Boxeo Tecate” on Unimas

The “biggest little boxing show” in Ventura County will make its triumphant return to the Oceanview Pavilion in Port Hueneme, California as Top Rank in association with Bash Boxing brings another installment of Boxing By The Beach on Saturday April 2, 2016.
Located adjacent to boxing rich Oxnard, the Oceanview Pavilion has been home to the area’s most notable boxing and wrestling events over the past decade.  As with previous Boxing By The Beach shows, local fight fans will be treated to a combination of world class talent, former amateur standouts, and local prospects…all in one show.
Santa Barbara’s Francisco “Chia” Santana (23-4-1, 12KOs) will headline the televised portion of Top Rank’s Solo Boxeo Tecate on Unimas series in a 10 round welterweight bout against Ed “The Lion” Paredes (36-5-1, 24KOs).
Santana, a former sparring partner of Manny Pacquiao and Amir Khan and a Knuckleheadz Boxing Gym stable mate of Victor Ortiz, has won 11 of his last 12 bouts including victories over World Champion Joachim Alcine, former world title challenger Freddy Hernandez, and an upset of undefeated prospect Eddie Gomez.  Santana has fought 10 times in Ventura County and will look to make his 2016 homecoming a successful one.
Paredes comes into his crossroads bout with Santana a winner of 14 of his last 16 boxing bouts including victories over former World Champion Vivian Harris, former world title challenger Antonio Pitalua, and unbeaten prospect Joey Hernandez.  Paredes also met former world title challenger Jesus Soto Karass last year in Las Vegas.
Boxing By The Beach will also feature Orange County Lightweight Luis Ramos Jr. (25-2, 10KOs) making his Top Rank promotional debut.  Ramos Jr. started his professional career winning his first 23 bouts including victories over fellow Top Rank fighter and multiple world title challenger Ray Beltran and Oxnard’s David Rodela.  After taking two years off following back-to-back losses, Ramos is in the midst of a comeback and riding a two-bout winning streak.
As usual, boxers from the Robert Garcia Boxing Academy in Oxnard will be on display during Boxing By The Beach, topped off by two former amateur standouts now plying their trade as Top Rank blue-chip prospects, Alexander Besputin (4-0) and Maxim Dadashev.  Fellow Russian uber-prospect and 2012 London Olympics Gold Medalist Egor Mekhonstev (11-0, 7KOs) will also be featured in an 8 round Light Heavyweight bout.
One of the next generation of notable boxers coming out of Ventura County will begin to pave his professional road as Santa Maria’s Oscar Mendoza makes his professional debut at Boxing on The Beach on April 2nd in Port Hueneme.   Filling out the undercard will be Oxnard’s Julian “JuJu” Bautista (2-1), undefeated prospect from Woodland Hills Jessy Martinez (3-0), and Abraham Lopez (2-1) from Freddie Roach’s Wildcard West Boxing Club.
BOXING BY THE BEACH takes place on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at the Oceanview Pavilion, located at 575 E. Surfside Drive in Port Hueneme, California.

Undefeated lightweight Casey “The Wizard” Ramos (22-0, 5 KOs) of Austin, Texas, won an eight round technical decision over veteran Jonathan “Popeye” Perez (35-14, 27 KOs) on Saturday night at the Burbank Marriott Events Center in Burbank, California. After to a slow start, Ramos used the jab while Perez attempted to work his way in. Measuring with the jab in round two, Ramos dropped Perez with a counter left hook in round two. Ramos stuck to the jab and fired away one-two combinations in round three as Perez kept coming. In round four, a clash of heads caused a cut over Ramos’ right eye. The doctor took a look at Ramos’ cut and let him continue. Halfway through in the sixth round, Ramos connected with a huge right to start the round. He continued to outbox Perez with blood flowing from the cut. In round eight, referee Raul Caiz took Ramos to the corner and the ring doctor determined Ramos couldn’t continue. The bout went to the scorecards where all three judges scored the bout 80-71.

Unbeaten South El Monte super lightweight Arnold Barboza (11-0, 4 KOs) won a hard fought six round unanimous decision over Max Becerra (8-2-2, 5 KOs) of Vacaville, California. The left hand by Barbosa found its mark in the opening round as he tagged Becerra continuously. Things got a litte rough when Becerra hit Barboza after the referee separated them. It was a fast-paced chess match in round three. Barboza landed a left momentarily staggering Becerra early in round four. Later in the round, Barboza connected with a hard left hook but Becerra returned the favor connecting with his left hook. Sticking the jab in round five Barboza backed up Becerra who continued trade with him. The sixth and final round had everyone on their feet as the fighters traded away in the center of the ring. Judges scored the bout 60-54, 60-54, and 59-55 for Barbosa.

Sacramento featherweight Guy Robb (18-1, 8 KOs) stopped Carlos Padilla (15-4-1, 9 KOs) of Columbia in round four of a scheduled eight rounder. Robb stalked Padilla early on in the fight. Robb pressed behind the jab in round two. Continuing to be the aggressor in round three Robb outworked Padilla but the Colombian fighter began connecting on the inside. A left hook by Robb in round four staggered Padilla. Robb backed him into the corner and scoring a knockdown. Padilla managed to finished the round, but couldn’t come out for round five.

Colombian lightweight contender and former world title challenger Miguel Marriaga (22-1, 18 KOs) hammered out an eight round unanimous decision over Filipino Adones Aguelo (24-13-2, 16 KOs). In a competitive bout, Marriaga and Aguelo exchanged heavy punches in round four as Aguelo backed Marriaga to the ropes with a right but Marriaga stood in there trading. In the second half of the fight, Aguelo pressured Marriaga who was boxing at a distance. In the eighth and final round, Aguelo sensed the urgency urging Marriaga to stand and trade as the Colombian circled the ring sticking the jab. Judges scored the bout 77-75, 77-55 and 79-73 for Marriaga.

Unbeaten Fresno middleweight Joe Louie Lopez (8-0, 5 KOs) scored a third round stoppage over Liam Vaughn (9-3, 2 KOs) of Hollywood by way of Liverpool, England. In round three, Lopez connected with a solid right hand hurting Vaughn. Lopez followed up with a series of big punches as referee Lou Moret stepped in to stop the fight at 1:16.

Hollywood welterweight Zachary “Kid Yamaka” Wohlman (9-2-1, 1 KO) won a four round unanimous decision over Lionel Jimenez (2-10, 2 KOs) of Dallas, Texas. Judges scored the bout 40-36, 40-36, and 39-37.
Middleweight Cesar Hernandez (1-1) of Tracy, California, won a four round unanimous decision over Konstantin Kupianskii (1-1) of Oxnard. Hernandez came out swinging wildly and was the aggressor in the opening round as the tall and lanky Kupianskii measured with the jab. Continuing to press in round two, Hernandez was all over Kupianskii. Referee Raul Caiz Sr deducted a point from the Russian for holding. Judges scored the bout 40-36, 39-36, 39-36.

In the opening bout from the Burbank Marriott Events Center in Burbank, California, super bantamweight Miguel Alcantara (2-0, 2 KOs) of Los Angeles scored a second round knockout over Michael Alcarez (1-9) of Houston. Alcantara teed off Alcaraz from the opening bell and in the second round landed a series of uppercuts that forced referee Dr. Lou Moret to stop the fight at 1:31.

While boxing fans from around the world witness the main event on Top Rank's Solo Boxeo on Unimas, the undercard of Valley Fight Night should also deliver on its share of excitement. Here's a preview of some of the notable bouts TV viewers might miss out on but fans at the Burbank Marriott Events Center will enjoy.

Joe Louie Lopez (7-0, 4KOs) vs. Liam Vaughan (9-2, 2KOs) – 4 Rounds
Ever since leaving the gridiron for the squared circle, Fresno's Smokin' Joe Louis Lopez has made a name for himself on the Central California boxing circuit. The former Fresno City College football player went undefeated in an 8-bout amateur career and has began his professional career with an unblemished record in his first seven pro bouts. But the verdict is still out on Lopez as he has yet to face upper level competition while fighting solely in the Fresno area.
Lopez wil
l look to invade the Southern California boxing circuit against a British import that has made Los Angeles his adopted home, Liam "Punch" Vaughan (9-2, 2KOs). Vaughan made the long journey from Liverpool, England to Wildcard Boxing Club 4 years ago and has become a Freddie Roach favorite for his busy and tough-nosed brand of boxing. Training at Wildcard everyday has afforded Vaughan access to some of the best boxers in the world and he will take that experience into his crossroads battle with Lopez.

Size and strength could be a factor in this bout as the natural middleweight Lopez will be facing Vaughan, a former Light Middleweight, at Lopez's preferred weight of 163 pounds. But the British bomber Vaughan has shown great hand speed in the past and will look to use his quickness to his advantage. While Lopez will have many friends and family make the drive down from Fresno, Vaughan should enjoy an advantage from the partisan crowd that will surely come to support Vaughan and other Wildcard fighters on the card. With both boxers having much to prove, this bout has the potential to be one of the most entertaining, non-stop action affairs of the evening.

Arnold Barbosa (10-0, 4 KOs) vs. Max Becerra (8-1-2, 5KOs)– 6 Rounds
South El Monte's Barbosa has been put on the fast track to success with five bouts in 2015 and an impressive first round knockout of veteran Robbie Cannon to begin 2016. Barbosa makes a quick return against his toughest challenge to date as he faces the upset-minded Becerra. Becerra began his career in Northern California but moved to Santa Ana and suffered the only blemish on his record in an April 2015 decision loss to undefeated prospect Kevin Watts. Becerra will look to re-energize a promising boxing career after picking up two quick wins in Mexico, while Barbosa will look to continue his rapid progression in the pro ranks. Neither pugilist in this one will be looking to give an inch so an all-out battle may be on the horizon.

Guy Robb (17-1, 7KOs) vs. Carlos Padilla (15-3-1, 9KOs) – 8 Rounds
Sacramento's Guy Robb is riding a 10 bout win streak since his memorable 2012 Shobox battle against world ranked Joel Diaz Jr. (now 21-0, 17KOs) wherein both boxers tasted the canvas. Diaz Jr.'s ascension in the boxing ranks is also indicative of Robb's ability to hang with the best and beat most of them. Now 17-1 and continuing to impress the Top Rank brass, Robb may be on the verge of meeting another heralded prospect for a crossroads bout in the future. But first he must get by hard hitting Columbian Carlos Padilla who has already challenged for a World Title, albeit unsuccessfully. This bout may be scheduled for 8 rounds but will likely not see the final bell.

Miguel Marriaga (21-1, 18KOs) vs. Adones Aguelo (24-12-2, 16KOs) – 8 Rounds
Columbia's world-ranked Miguel Marriaga comes into every bout with relentless pressure and aggression that only few boxers can handle. But Filipino Adones Aguelo has hung around with the best of them and has only been stopped in two professional bouts while showing a proficiency to get the better of most of his opponents. This bout will be a classic battle of wills that will likely be decided in the later rounds. But not before what is sure to be several rounds of fireworks from both combatants.

Zachary Wohlman (8-2-1) vs. Lionel Jimenez (2-9) – 4 Rounds
Hollywood's Zachary "Kid Yamaka" Wohlman makes his return to the ring after an 18-month layoff marred by injury. Wohlman will face a real litmus test to see if he will continue his professional career in Lionel Jimenez, who's record is extremely deceiving when taking into account the fact that 10 of the 12 opponents Jimenez has faced have been undefeated and Jimenz has never been stopped. Jimenez previously battled four tough rounds with another boxer on the card, Arnold Barbosa, and will look to give the upstart Wohlman all he can handle.

Today, Lights Out Promotions, in association with Bash Boxing, will present a reincarnation of sorts. California Xtreme Fighting has dusted off their banner of war, and once again it will be flying over the warriors inside of a cage. We are proud to present CXF: The Return, which will be held today at The Sportsmen's Lodge in Studio City.

Many of Southern California's top fighters have cut their teeth under the CXF Banner including: Joe Schilling, Jared Hamman, Tony Ferguson, Joe Condon, Jared Papazian, Francisco Rivera, Aaron Miller and many others. Since CXF's last event many have tried to fill the void, but none have been able.

"The Return" of CXF has one purpose. The combat gods have short memories, so we will jog their recollection by putting together one of the best fight cards of the year. CXF: "The Return"will feature some of southern California's top mixed martial arts talent, all of them looking to move one step closer to the promise land. The main card will feature a mix of seasoned professionals, and talented young 'up and comers' that will end up being future champions in this sport. This is an event that cannot be missed, so get your tickets early. This event is certain to sell out.

Go To: www.valleyfightnight.com to purchase tickets.

The Main Event:
Pablo Sabori (6-2 MMA) vs Karen Darabedyan: (10-5 MMA) 155 lbs
Both fighters have well decorated pedigrees, and they both come from outstanding teams. Sabori a native Brazilian will be bringing his well rounded striking game into the cage, looking to turn lights out early. Darabedyan a grappler by trade, is also not one to shy away from a fire fight. He too has explosive hands with excellent footwork, so a toe-to-toe war is a possibility. However, he has been inactive in MMA for a little over a year. Will the ring rust be an issue? Sabori is currently riding a 4 fight win streak, and a hot horse is always tough to bet against. This fight could go either way, making all who witness the only sure fire guaranteed winners! Both of these guys are highly skilled, so this fight may produce any one, or maybe all of the performance bonuses! Buckle your seat belt and enjoy the ride.

The Main Card:
Shohei Yamamoto (2-0 MMA) vs Erick Gonzalez (4-1 MMA) 155 lbs

This is a very intriguing fight. Both of these fighters had absolutely stellar amateur careers, which resulted in success early on as professionals. Erick 'The Ghost Pepper' Gonzalez a spicy striker with power in both hands, has deadly Muay Thai strikes. He is extremely precise with his striking, and on the mat he has some explosive jiujitsu. Shohei Yamamoto is a well rounded fighter with knockout power in both hands. He also maintains a CSW pedigree which could make him a nightmare if he secures top position. Both of these guys are on the rise, what a treat to see them compete this early in there careers. Experts always claim styles make fights, and this one is not different. This fight may end up being the Fight of The Night.

Mosses Murrieta (1-0 MMA) vs John Gendron (1-0 MMA) 185 lbs
What a matchup! Both of these guys seem to enjoy throwing their hands, and when they do, they tend to make a mess. Murrieta destroyed his last opponent via KO early in the first round, while Gendron recently slugged out a decision in his pro debut. Both of these guys can end the fight with one punch. Very often when you have that kind of power facing off, you end up getting a back and forth war. This fight could produce either Knockout of The Night, or Fight of The Night, or dare we dream both?

Matthew Spencer (3-1 MMA) vs Idris Wasi (1-3 MMA) 185 lbs
Both of these fighters are hungry. Losses can be motivating that way, they are tough to stomach. Idris Wasi is cardio machine, who went the distance in his last fight, his debut under the Bellator banner. However he ended up on the wrong side of a judges decision. Now looking to punch his ticket back to the big leagues, Wasi must first ply his craft at CXF: The Return. His opponent Matthew Spencer is also coming off a disappointing loss, and is flat out chomping at the bit to get back in the cage. In Wasi, Spencer sees dinner, one he must first hunt himself. Spencer a jiujitsu purple belt with heavy hands has fought here before, and is banking on the hometown support. Both fighters are excellent athletes so this one might end up a going the distance in a back and forth war.

Bobby Sanchez (8-27 MMA) vs Derrion 'DC' Chapman (1-4-1 MMA) 145 lbs
Sanchez comes in off a win, and brings over 10 years experience as a professional fighter. In his career he has fought UFC veteran Cody McKenzie, Bellator MMA and WEC vet Chad George, Bellator MMA veteran Mark Vorgeas, and WEC legend Manny Tapia. He will need to rely on that experience as he is set to take on the always entertaining Derrion Chapman. Chapman returns to our cage for the 4th time and is looking to put an end to a 2 fight skid. Both of these guys are pretty quick, so don't blink.
Taylor Alfaro (0-0 MMA) vs Kyler Phillips (0-0 MMA) 145 lbs

Both of these fellas are making their professional debuts after stellar records as amateurs. Neither has tasted defeat before, going a combined 10-0 as amateurs. With 8 of those fights ending decisively, by either submission or knockout this is a fight you will not want to miss. Two young guns looking to make a name at the others expense. This fight could go either way, and may end up producing a future champion.
Chase Gibson (MMA) vs A.J. Bryant (MMA) 145 lbs

Chase Gibson burst on to the professional scene as an undefeated amateur with a whole bunch of eyes on him. Three fights into his career he finds himself in the midst of his first losing streak. Losing 2 of his first 3 bouts via decision, Gibson is certainly looking to getting back to his forte, which is knocking people out. In his way talented youngster A.J. Bryant who is making his professional debut. Bryant, a heavy handed scrapper, is eager to start his pro career the way his amateur one ended with a victory.

Brad Robinson (1-1 MMA) vs Andryii Vasylenko (3-0 MMA) 220lbs
Training out of Hayastan MMA, Andryii Vasylenko enters the professional ranks with one hell of a pedigree behind him. The concrete fisted grappler can end any fight in an instant, either with his vicious hands, or on the mat with his stifling grappling. At 6'5 Bradley Robinson will be the first opponent Vasylenko won't be able to dominant with sheer size. If Robinson can utilize his reach he should be able to keep the fight at a range where only he can score. This fight is going to end being a battle of will, look for both fighters to assert themselves early in this battle.

Keith Cutrone (0-0 MMA) vs Edgar Khachatryan (0-0 MMA) 170 lbs
Both of these fighters are making their professional debuts. Cutrone, a submission expert has won all three of his amateur bouts via the tap, is looking to parlay that success into a debut win as a professional. His opponent Edgar Khachatryan also making his debut fights out of the famed Hayastan Academy, where he trains under grappling gods Gokor Chivichyan and Gene Lebell. With those guys leading your camp, you can expect a well prepared fighter ready to go to war. Keep in mind these guys are middleweights, so pay attention. Both of these guys throw bricks!

Tigran Grigoryan (0-0 MMA) vs Joshua Jones (0-1 MMA) 170 lbs
Both Grigoryan and Jones had extensive amateur careers. Jones is getting back into the cage for the first time since 2014 and is looking to bounce back from a loss in his pro debut. Grigoryan 4-1 as an amateur, is entering the pro ranks riding a 4 fight win streak, with 2 of those wins coming via submission. Grigoryan may maintain a slight edge on the mat, however Jones has much more time in the cage, and that experience could prove to be the difference maker. Also, both of these guys have the gas to go the distance, so keep a score card on this one, it could end up being that close.

In an Amateur ShowcaseJonathan Quirozfrom CMMA will be taking on Leon Shahbazianfrom Glendale Fighting Club at 170 lbs.

"CXF: The Return" presented by In Sync Productions, Lights Out Promotions, and Bash Entertainment, takes place on today at Sportsmen's Lodge Event Center located at 4234 Coldwater Canyon Ave. (cross street Ventura Blvd.) in Studio City, California.

CXF: California Xtreme Fighting Arises Anew In Front of A Packed House!

By: Jonathan M King The Clinch Report
Photos By: John Walsh The Clinch Report
From 2006-2009 California Xtreme Fighting was a steadfast beacon in a sea of shady promotions. Originally under the guidance of Mixed Martial Arts lifer Mike Rush, the promotion flourished for 3 years utilizing some of the best young fighters in the area. Jared Hamman, Brett Cooper, Francisco Rivera, Tony Fergusson, Daniel Hernandez, Ara Muradyan, Jared Papazian, Sevak Magakian and many more all found themselves cutting there teeth under the CXF banner. Many of whom have gone on the UFC and Bellator.
Now 7 years after their last bout ended CXF has returned. The first card back from their hibernation featured the return of grappling wizard Karen Darabedyan who had not fought since 2014. His opponent Pablo Sabori was riding a 4 fight win streak, and was anything but a tune up fight. From the opening bell Sabori came out aggressive, perhaps hoping to capitalize on some ring rust. However, Darabedyan showed little if any oxidation. After a few exchanges, Darabedyan charged forward with punches and was able to clinch Sabori before taking him to the mat. Once there, it was only a matter of time before the python like choke followed.  Sabori was forced to tap due to a rear naked choke, halfway through the first round.
The tough opponent, and impressive win served as a measuring stick for Darabedyan who said in his post fight interview that he was now certain he was ready for a return to the UFC.
Also victorious on the card were: Matthew Spencer who secured a first round impressive armbar win over striker Idris Wasi, Joshua Jones defeated hometown favorite Tigran Grigoryan, Moses Murrieta took a split decision over John Gendron, Derion Chapman utilized a slick triangle to finish veteran Bobby Sanchez in the first round, Keith Cutrone TKO’d Edgar Khachatryan in the first round of their very entertaining bout, Andrii Vasylenko took out a very game Brad Robinson with a slick armbar, Chase Gibson finished AJ Bryant with a signature D’arce choke, Kyler Phillips defeated Taylor Alfaro in a one sided contest. Perhaps the most entertaining bout of the evening took place between Erick Gonzalez and Shohei Yamamoto. Gonzalez was able to swarm for a 3rd round TKO in a back and forth war that had the sold out crowd on their feet.
