Diaz smashes Carneiro, Ramos tops Savi

Undefeated junior welterweight prospect Joel Diaz Jr. (22-0, 18 KOs) of Palmdale, California, stopped Joaquim Carneiro (23-9, 21 KOs) of Brazil in three rounds on Saturday night in the inaugural “LA Battle Club” event at the Los Angeles Badminton Club in El Monte, California. Diaz teed off on Carneiro in the opening round busting his nose with his inside attack. Connecting with uppercuts, Diaz battered the bloodied Carneiro in round two. The carnage was stopped at the end of round three with Carneiro was bleeding massively. 

Former world champion Rico “Sauvecito” Ramos (24-6, 12 KOs) of Pico Rivera, California, won an eight round unanimous decision over former world title challenger Justin “The Vodou” Savi (28-6-2, 18 KOs) of Benin in a featherweight bout. A left hook by Ramos in the closing seconds of round one dropped Savi. Ramos then dominated and outworked Savi en route to a 79-72, 79-72 and 77-74 win.

Super welterweight Virgilijus Stapulionis (27-3-1, 19 KOs) of Lithuania won a ten round split decision over previously unbeaten Nathaniel Gallimore (13-1-1, 10 KOs) of Jamaica. Stapulionis was the aggressor while Gallimore boxed from the outside. The Stapulionis suffered a cut over his left eye in round three and Gallimore dropped Stapulionis with a right hand in round five. However a crushing right by Stapulionis hurt Gallimore badly in round six. Bleeding from both eyes in the later rounds, Stapulionis pressed as Gallimore kept his distance. The tenth and final round saw a bloodied Stapulionis and Gallimore battle to the final bell. In the end, the judges scored it 97-92, 96-93 for Stapulionis and 96-93 for Gallimore.

Pomona super welterweight David Lopez (2-0, 1 KO) won a unanimous decision over Rasheed Lawal (1-3, 0 KOs) of Nigeria in a scheduled four round bout. Lopez pressed the slick southpaw Lawal and landed some solid punches late in the fight to finish strong. All three judges scored the bout 39-37.

Burbank welterweight Damian Lopez won his professional debut with a second round stoppage over Jose Mejia (1-6, 1 KO) in a scheduled four rounder. A right hand by Lopez dropped Mejia in round one. Lopez continued to attack but Mejia survived the round. The second round saw Lopez continue his attack prompting the referee to step in and wave off the bout at 1:48.

Unbeaten welterweight Jessy Martinez (4-0, 1 KO) of Woodland Hills won a unanimous decision over Tavorus Teague (3-12-2, 2 KOs) over four rounds. Martinez outworked the tough journeyman Teague who kept pressing forward. Scores were 40-36, 40-36, and 39-37.

Jr middleweight Madiyar Ashkeyev (3-0, 2 KOs) stopped Hector Mercado (2-7-1, 0 KOs) in the final round of a scheduled six round bout. Ashkeyev landed power punches and was aggressive throughout the fight. The Kazakh-born Ashkeyev finished strong as a flurry of punches forced referee Zach Young to stop the fight at 2:32.

Super lightweight Eddie Diaz (2-4-2, 1 KO) won a majority decision over Mike Melikiyan (1-1, 0 KOs) in a four round bout. Judges scored the fight 40-36, 40-36, and 38-38.

In the opening bout, debuting super welterweight Enriko Gogokhia of Georgia stopped Steven McKinney (1-8, 0 KOs) in round two of a scheduled four round bout. A barrage of punches forced referee Raul Caiz Jr. to halt the fight at 2:32 of round two. 

“LA Battle Club” was promoted by Bash Boxing and PR Sports Promotion. In attendance were lots of former world champions including James “Lights Out” Toney and Vic “Raging Bull” Darchinyan at ringside, and Robert Garcia and Chris Byrd working the corners.
