YOU'LL ALWAYS REMEMBER YOUR FIRST TIME...

Fighting Irish's Garrity McOsker Makes Debuts This Saturday

As is often in the case, every local boxing show has a pro debut somewhere on the card. Unlike the main event that usually features experienced professionals seeking to take one step closer towards glory in their chosen sport, the Debutante fighter, along with a legion of family and friends, anxiously waits for his first step into the squared circle as a newly minted professional boxer. That first bout will be engrained in a boxer's memory forever. During this Saturday's Fight Night @ Sportsmen's Lodge in Studio City, California, Light Welterweight Garrity McOsker will do just that.

Growing up in the San Pedro neighborhood of Los Angeles, Garrity McOsker early loves revolved around sports. At the age of 12, McOsker added boxing to the mix. His earliest fascination with the sport came from a book he picked up at a book fair in first grade.  "It was one of those 'First Chapter Book' types and it was a biography on Muhammad Ali, I read that a hundred times," said McOsker.  "I used to watch boxing on TV with my grandpa and had long wanted to box before actually convincing my mom to let me join a gym.” It wasn't until a gym opened up in his hometown of San Pedro while he was in middle school that his mother allowed him to start boxing.

Boxing had become a part of McOsker's childhood and adolescence which he continued to compete in while playing football, track, and rugby in high school and later rugby in college.  While at the University of Notre Dame, McOsker played rugby for 4 years and took his amateur boxing background to work with his participation in the University's Bengal Bouts program, an 85 year tradition that hosts a smoker tournament each year to raise money for schools run by the Holy Cross Missions in Bangladesh.

McOsker played a key role in this program winning 3 Bengal Bouts Championships, serving as a captain/coach for two years, and making the trip to do service in Bangladesh before his senior year where he served as Vice President for the organization and earned his degree in Management Entrepreneurship. The 23 year-old McOsker, trained by Danny Zamora, comes full circle with his boxing career this Saturday night. It will be a experience engrained in the young fighter's memory forever. And that's what boxing is all about.
